How Long Does Drywall Installation Take? A Greenville Timeline

Phase 1: hang day

When Greenville homeowners ask us how long their drywall project will take, the honest answer is 'it depends on the weather and the size.' Drywall finishing is one of the most weather-sensitive trades in residential construction — humid summers slow drying times by 24 hours per coat, while cool dry days speed things up. Here's a realistic day-by-day breakdown for a typical Upstate single-family new build of about 2,500 square feet.

Phase 2: tape and first coat

Phase 1 — Hang day (1–2 days). Our hanging crew shows up early with a truck of drywall already stocked at the job site. We start with ceilings, then work down the walls. Standard residential homes go up at roughly 50–75 sheets per hanger per day, and a typical 2,500 sq ft house consumes 90–120 sheets. Two skilled hangers usually finish a hang in a long single day or split it across two shorter days.

Phase 3: second and third coats

Phase 2 — Tape and first coat (1 day). Once the board is up, our finishing crew comes in to install paper tape on every flat seam, mesh tape on inside corners, and metal or vinyl corner bead on outside corners. The first coat of joint compound (the 'tape coat') goes on at the same time, embedding the tape and starting to fill the seam.

Phase 4: sanding

Phase 3 — Second and third coats (2 days, with drying between). Day two of finishing is the 'block coat' — a wider, fuller coat that builds the joint up to the surrounding wall plane. Day three is the 'skim coat,' a thinner final pass that feathers the joint out 12–18 inches and prepares for sanding. Each coat needs to dry fully before the next, and in humid Upstate summers we sometimes add a half-day for drying.

Phase 5: prime and final

Phase 4 — Sanding (1 day). Sanding is the dusty phase. We run vacuum-shrouded Festool sanders on every interior surface to minimize cleanup, and pole-sand high areas. Inside corners and outside corners get hand-sanding for precision. By the end of sanding day, walls are smooth, even, and ready for primer.

Phase 5 — Prime and texture (1 day). Primer goes on after sanding to seal the joint compound and the paper face of the drywall. If your project specifies a wall or ceiling texture (knockdown, orange peel), it's sprayed after primer dries. Then we walk the job site with you to mark any touch-ups and complete final cleanup.

Total: 6–8 working days for a standard 2,500 sq ft Greenville new build, from start of hang to finished primer. Larger homes, vaulted ceilings, and Level 5 finishes can extend this to 10–14 days. We give you a written schedule before we start so you can coordinate with painters and trim carpenters. Call (864) 555-0100 for a free walkthrough and timeline on your project.
