Signs You Need Drywall Repair in Your Greenville Home

Cracks above doors and windows

Drywall problems rarely fix themselves. What starts as a faint hairline crack above a doorway can, left alone, grow into a sagging ceiling section or a costly mold remediation project. Greenville's humid summers, occasional severe storms, and the seasonal settling that affects every Upstate home all contribute to drywall wear. Here's how to recognize the warning signs.

Stains and discoloration

The most common sign of trouble is cracking. Small, straight hairline cracks above door frames and windows are usually cosmetic — the byproduct of normal seasonal expansion. They can be filled, taped, and painted in an afternoon. But cracks that follow staircase patterns, run diagonally across walls, or appear suddenly after a heavy rain often indicate structural movement, foundation issues, or framing problems. Wide cracks (1/8" or larger), cracks that reopen quickly after patching, and cracks that change in width seasonally all warrant a closer look.

Nail pops and screw pops

Stains and discoloration are red flags you should never ignore. A brown or yellow ring on a ceiling almost always means water — from a roof leak, an upstairs plumbing line, a failed flashing detail, or condensation around an HVAC duct. The drywall itself can usually be repaired or replaced quickly, but the source of moisture must be fixed first. Painting over a water stain without addressing the leak guarantees the problem will return, often with mold. In Greenville's climate, even a small slow leak can support mold growth within 48 to 72 hours.

Sagging ceilings

Nail pops and screw pops — small round bumps where fasteners have worked loose — are extremely common in homes that are 5 to 20 years old. They happen as framing lumber dries and shrinks, pushing fasteners outward. Individually they're easy to fix: drive a new screw nearby, fill, sand, and paint. But if you're seeing nail pops throughout a room or across a ceiling, the right repair is to add new fasteners on a regular pattern and re-finish the affected areas.

Texture and seam visibility

Sagging or bowing ceilings are serious. A ceiling that visibly droops, has soft spots when pressed, or shows wavy lines along seams is telling you something has failed — usually drywall fasteners pulling out of the joists, or the drywall itself losing strength due to water exposure. This is not a DIY project. Left alone, a sagging ceiling can fall, and a falling 4x8 sheet of 5/8" drywall is heavy enough to seriously injure someone.

Pest and impact damage

Texture mismatches and visible seams become more apparent with time as paint ages and lighting changes. If you've had patches done in the past and they now stand out — too smooth, too rough, or differently textured — a Level 5 skim coat or matching knockdown application can blend them back in. Older Greenville homes often have multiple generations of repairs visible on a single wall.

Finally, watch for pest or impact damage. Mice and squirrels occasionally chew through drywall, especially in attics. Kids' toys, moving furniture, and dog tails leave their marks too. Any hole larger than a quarter should be properly patched with a backed repair — not just filled with spackle, which will crack out. Call Drywall Greenville at (864) 555-0100 for a free assessment.
