Moisture-Resistant Drywall for Greenville Bathrooms: What Code Requires

The three moisture board options
Greenville's humidity is no joke. With average summer dew points in the high 60s to low 70s, any drywall in a bathroom, laundry room, or other moisture-prone area needs to be specified correctly or you'll be tearing it out within a few years. Here's what code requires and what we recommend across the Upstate.
Where each is required by code
Three main options exist for moisture-prone areas: green board (moisture-resistant gypsum), purple board (Gold Bond's XP brand or USG Sheetrock Mold Tough), and cement board (Durock, HardieBacker). Each has a specific use case. Green board has a wax-treated paper face that resists moisture better than standard drywall but is not waterproof. Purple board adds mold-resistant additives to both the face paper and the gypsum core. Cement board is waterproof and goes behind tile in showers and tub surrounds.
Greenville's humid climate considerations
Code in Greenville and surrounding South Carolina jurisdictions generally requires cement board behind any tile in wet areas — meaning the inside of a shower stall, tub surround walls, and the wet portion of a steam room. Green board or purple board is required on bathroom walls and ceilings that aren't tiled. Standard drywall is permitted in bathrooms only if the area gets significant ventilation and is well away from direct water contact.
Installation differences
Our recommendation for Greenville's climate is to upgrade to purple board (mold-resistant) in all bathrooms and laundry rooms, not just green board. The cost premium is small ($2–$4 per sheet) and the mold resistance makes a real difference in our humid summers. We've torn out enough mold-damaged green board behind master bathroom vanities to know that the extra protection is worth it.
Cost premium over standard drywall
Installation isn't dramatically different. Green and purple board hang and finish like standard drywall — same screws, same tape, same joint compound. Cement board requires modified-thinset adhesive when bedding the seams and is heavier and harder to cut, but our crews are well-practiced. The transition from cement board (in wet area) to green board (outside wet area) gets a sealed joint with mesh tape and modified thinset.
Cost premium: purple board runs about $14–$17 per 4x8 sheet in Greenville vs. $10–$13 for standard 1/2" drywall. Cement board runs $13–$16 per 3x5 sheet. For a typical master bathroom, the material upgrade adds about $250–$450 to the project. Cheap insurance against mold and rot.
