Preparing Your Greenville House for Drywall Day

Two weeks before
If you've never lived through a drywall project, the prep work and disruption can catch you off guard. Drywall is one of the dustier trades in residential construction, and a well-prepared house makes the difference between a smooth project and a stressful one. Here's a Greenville homeowner's checklist for the weeks leading up to and through hang day.
One week before
Two weeks before: confirm that all rough-in trades are finished. Electrical wiring, plumbing rough, low-voltage cabling, HVAC ductwork, and any insulation should all be in and inspected. We will not hang over uninspected electrical or plumbing, and starting before insulation is in causes thermal bridging in walls. Also confirm any windows are installed and properly flashed — wet drywall from a leaking window is a guaranteed redo.
The day before
One week before: clear the work areas. Move all furniture, area rugs, and electronics out of any room getting drywall. Cover what you can't move with plastic sheeting. We bring our own containment plastic but you'll appreciate the extra layer on anything you really care about. Take down wall art, mirrors, and curtains in adjacent rooms — drywall dust travels surprisingly far through forced-air HVAC.
During the hang
The day before: change your HVAC filter to a fresh basic filter (drywall dust will clog a high-MERV filter fast), and seal off any HVAC supply and return vents in the work area with painter's plastic. Stage a parking spot for our truck and dumpster (often we'll bring a small trailer). If you have pets, plan to crate them away from the work area or board them for the day — dust and tools are not pet-friendly.
After the crew leaves
During the hang: stay clear of the work area. Drywall sheets are heavy, screws and lift tools are everywhere, and crew safety depends on not having extra foot traffic. If you need to communicate, our foreman wears a high-vis vest and has a phone. We can usually answer questions during a normal lunch break. Don't worry about offering food or drinks — we bring our own coolers and don't want to be tracking through your kitchen.
After the hang and through finishing: the drywall dust is real. We HEPA vacuum the work area at the end of every day and final-clean at project completion, but expect a faint film on baseboards and trim through the project. Run a higher-MERV HVAC filter (MERV 11 or 13) for two weeks after we finish to catch the fine particles still circulating. Many Greenville homeowners also hire a deep cleaner for the week after we leave.
Last tip: do not paint the day after we finish. Joint compound continues to dry and cure for 7–10 days, and primer applied too soon can show shrinkage or hairline cracks at the seams. We typically prime as part of our finish, then your painter waits at least 48–72 hours before topcoat. Plan your trades accordingly.
