Soundproofing With Drywall: Options for Greenville Homes

How sound travels through walls

Greenville homeowners increasingly ask us about soundproofing — most often for home offices in newly-built houses, primary bedrooms next to teenagers, and theater rooms. Drywall plays a central role in any sound-control strategy. Here's a practical overview of what works.

Mass: double layers and 5/8" board

First, understand how sound travels through a wall. Airborne sound (voices, TV) vibrates the wall surface, transmits through the wall structure, and re-radiates on the other side. The three levers for reducing this transmission are mass (heavier walls vibrate less), decoupling (separating the two wall faces so vibration doesn't transfer), and damping (converting vibration energy to heat).

Decoupling: resilient channel and clips

Mass is the simplest and cheapest improvement. Doubling a standard 1/2" drywall wall to two layers of 5/8" Type X drywall — staggered seams, screws into different studs — adds about 3–5 STC points to the assembly (STC = Sound Transmission Class; higher is better). A typical Greenville interior wall comes in around STC 35; doubling drywall pushes it toward STC 40, which makes a noticeable difference for voices.

Damping: Green Glue and QuietRock

Decoupling is more dramatic. Installing resilient channel (RC-1) or sound isolation clips with hat channel between the studs and the drywall breaks the direct vibration path. Done correctly, this can push an assembly to STC 50 or higher — enough that loud TV in one room is just barely audible in the next. Done incorrectly (one screw bridging the channel back to the stud), it provides almost no benefit. We've seen both.

Recommended combinations for Greenville homes

Damping uses a viscoelastic layer to convert sound vibration to heat. Green Glue is the most common product — applied as two tubes per 4x8 sheet between the two layers of drywall in a double-layer assembly, it damps the sandwich and adds 4–7 STC points beyond simple double layers. QuietRock is a factory-damped drywall product that does the same thing in a single sheet, at a higher price point.

Our recommended combinations for Greenville homes: for a home office in standard construction, two layers of 5/8" drywall with Green Glue between them on the office side is a great value at about $1.50/sq ft extra. For a home theater or primary bedroom on a busy interior wall, add resilient channel or sound clips for true decoupling — but plan on $3–$5/sq ft total premium and a slightly thicker wall. For a recording studio, talk to an acoustical engineer.

One caveat — soundproofing is only as good as the weakest link. A perfect STC 55 wall with a hollow-core door, an open electrical outlet, or an HVAC duct passing through is functionally an STC 30 wall. Soundproofing is a system, not a single product.
